Giardiasis is an infection of the small intestine that's caused by a parasite called Giardia intestinalis. The most common way to get infected with giardia is swallowing contaminated water, although eating infected food and person-to-person contact are other ways of getting sick. It's estimated that about 20,000 cases of giardiasis occur each year in the U.S., but the vast majority recover fairly quickly after experiencing cramps, nausea and diarrhea. The symptoms of giardiasis can often be eased by home care, although more serious cases sometimes require hospitalization.
