What Are The Most Common Fractures In Children? - Dr. Prashanth Jain שברים שכיחים בילדים

Fractures in children are very different from fractures in adults. This is because of the physiology of the bone. Periosteum which is very thick for the bone in children is the one which prevents any sort of fractures in children as it gives that extra stability to the bone. The bones are rich in fibrous tissue and they have that extra amount of plasticity and so they can take the impact of any fall or injuries by bending forwards. The most common types of fractures common in children are the greenstick fractures, the torus fractures, the bucket handle fractures, Salter-Harris type of fractures. Salter-Harris type of fractures are the fractures which involve the growth plate and they are classified from type1 to type 5, with Type1 being the least severe and type 5 being the most severe and leading to a deformity of the growth of the bone. The greenstick fractures are the fractures of one of the cortex of the bone and that is because of the excess amount of periosteum that is being broken. The torus fractures or the bucket handle type of fractures are seen in the lower and of the radius and the lower end of the tibia and they can be managed by simple splinting for 3 – 4 weeks and the patient recovers very well. The important thing of fractures is the injuries to the growth plate and treat it accordingly. The most important sites which can get fractured are the elbow, the lower end of the radius, the forearm, the tibia, the femur very occasionally and very very rarely the neck of the femur.
